Richard Kneubuhler is an RN at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North. He wanted to tell his story and share the harrowing experience that changed his life for the better. “I was in a bad car accident and almost lost both my feet,” Richard said. “The great care I was provided led me to where I am today and inspires me every day to show the same compassion to my patients as was shown to me.”
“Every day for me is about making it better than yesterday,” Richard said. “I strive to put smiles on faces and be a positive influence on everyone I come into contact with. In our line of work there is never a dull moment – you expect the unexpected because we have such a complex patient population and when anybody needs help, we all pull together and collaborate – that’s what makes it a team effort.”
Richard recalled a story that stood out for him when he was just getting started at Kindred: “During my orientation I took care of a very critical patient. He made slow and steady gains and by the time my period of orientation was over, he had recovered to the point where he was able to leave the hospital. By now he remembered my name, we were able to have conversations and he made quite an impression on me – that the hard work we put in can give one a great deal of satisfaction.”
Looking toward the future, Richard shared that he would like to acquire additional experience and then put it to even greater use. “I would like to work in an emergency room, and then to teach classes to young nursing students,” Richard said. “It took me a long time to get where I am at. I tell people ‘don’t ever give up – don’t sweat the small stuff that can get in the way of accomplishing your goals,’ and to stay positive and surround yourself with positive people. It helps to make a difference in the lives of those you touch – and yours as well.”
